My Favourite Car Travel Games
My family has driven across Australia at least four times and car travel games have been our life saver. Each time we were that little bit older and needing a little bit more entertainment.
The following games can be adapted to suit almost any age group so they are great travel games for kids and adults. They are also suitable for any length journey.
My suggestion would be to copy and paste them into a word document. Arrange the instructions for each game into square boxes, print them off, laminate the page, cut them out and have them in a little card holder ready to randomly select what game you will play on your next journey
A – Z
Each player must start at A and work their way through the alphabet by spotting that letter on Billboards, road signs or number plates. Anything they see as they travel along can be used to find the next letter they are looking for. The difficulty of this came can be increased by limiting where you can find the letters. Eg. Number plates only!
20 Questions
Take turns to think of a person, place or thing and everyone else can ask 20 questions to work out what the answer is. The person who knows the answer can only answer yes or no to the questions.
I Spy
Take turns to choose something you can see and others take turns to guess what you have chosen. You begin your turn by saying, “I spy with my little eye, something beginning with….” You name the first letter and the person who guesses correctly then gets to have a turn.
Spotto
Pick a particular type of object that you have to look out for and yell out SPOTTO whenever you see it. The person who gets the most points (a point for each time you are correct) is the winner. You might like to set a start and end point so you know when to call it quits.
I’m going on an adventure….
Each person takes a turn and you work your way around the group with each person saying “I’m going on an adventure and I’m going to take…” Each person must name an item they will take with them but first must list every item that has already been said. Eg. Mum: “I’m going on an adventure and I’m going to take money”. Son: I’m going on an adventure and I’m going to take money and my bed”. And so on…
The fold over story…
This game can be done verbally or on paper. Verbally you create a story by saying one word or sentence each. The next person then carries on the story but can only say one word or sentence. You can decide how much information each person can give when it is their turn (ie. One word or one sentence.)
Alternatively, you can write down two sentences, fold over the paper so the next person can’t see it but leave the last two or three words visible for the next person to carry on from. Then once you have gone around a few times. Unfold the story and see what everyone has written. It makes for a good laugh and a good momento of the journey!
