Family Goals Self Assessment

Before you start print off this Family Goals Self Assessment page.

A home is to be lived in and to be enjoyed by the people who live there. As the mother of the family, we play a big part in what sort of atmosphere and environment are created. The following questions are designed to help you evaluate what you want your house to reflect and what you may need to change in order to develop the atmosphere you want.

Step 1. What You Want

Tick the following situations that you would like to see operating in your home. If you think of more family goals write them down below ...

  • Have your house fully clean once a week
  • Open closet doors and be able to see them neat and tidy and be able to find what you are looking for
  • Have everyone packed and ready for their day on time
  • Develop a system in your house where each person has their tasks to do to help the household run smoothly
  • Keep track of messages, meetings, appointments
  • An effective system of bills paid on time and a filing system that doesn’t create more work
  • A Desk or workspace that has a clean and clear bench top and an easy storage system for everything
  • Time to eat family dinners together
  • A relaxed afternoon because you aren’t stressed about what you will cook for tea and whether you are going to have the right ingredients
  • Good routines for your children so there are no exhausting arguments when it comes to bath time, bedtime or anything else that needs to be done regularly.
  • Enjoy your family vacations and special occasions because you’re not the one doing all the work
  • Find time to take care of yourself.
  • Have meaningful traditions that each of you look forward to throughout the year or throughout the week.

  • Step 2. Ranking

Try to rank each of the above family goals in the order you want to see happen in your family. With number 1 being the change you would like to see occur first. This is now your list you will refer back to so you know where you are up to in organizing your home and family.

    Step 3. Assess Your Home

Select the words that give an honest and accurate description of your home and how user-friendly it is. Use the blanks at the end to add others you think of.

    ° warm ° welcoming °stressful °drab ° uncomfortable ° light ° dark °dirty ° messy ° cluttered ° unpleasant ° happy ° user-friendly ° perfect ° coordinated ° cozy ° different ° unique ° spirited ° balanced ° bright ° neat ° noisy ° chaotic ° unorganized ° tidy ° shiny ° sloppy ° orderly ° attractive ° formal ° dusty ° smelly °beautiful ° sunny ° spacious ° cold ° expensive ° relaxed ° electic ° energizing ° homey °convenient ° joyful ° charming ° positive ° well arranged ° tense ° quiet ° fun ° calm ° soothing ° confusing ° rigid ° unsanitary ° dishevelled ° grand ° creative ° tacky ° intense ° imaginative ° fragrant ° purposeful ° simple ° appropriate ° immaculate ° functional ° fresh

Compare your list with your family goals want list from above. Do the words you select fit the environment you want to create? For example, if you chose formal and perfect, is that what you want if you have children and want them to enjoy their home?

The above list will also give you an indication of your natural tendencies for cleaning or tidiness. If you prefer simple and uncluttered, choose storage options with closed lids and cupboard doors. If you like to have everything in plain sight choose open shelves or fun coloured storage boxes with no lids.

If you like to be particular about putting things away, have a special box, tray or bag for different items in their drawers of cupboards. If you like to just throw things in cupboards and keep it easy, set up clear tubs with big labels on them, lids or no lids it doesn’t matter. Don’t stack them. Having them on wheels is even better. Have them in an easy access spot and then throw the items into them when it’s clean up time.

Now, grab a highlighter and highlight the words above that you think you need to change in order to create the home and family goals that you need.

You now know what you want. You know what your house currently is. This website will help you reach your family goals one area at a time.
