Time Management Skills for Food and Family Meals
Time management skills with food and family meals are great skills to learn. I have found them not only giving me more time during the week to sit and relax of an evening, but I also waste a lot less food and save on my grocery bill.
- One effective time management skill is to avoid long lines at the grocery store by going when no one else does; night time and early mornings
- Avoid ending up with excess food in your cupboard or too much of one product by creating your shopping list at home first.
- Spend less time making your grocery list by keeping an ongoing list of what you need as you run out. I have my list either in my Family Planner or I take it out, glue on a magnet and have it on the fridge
- Cook double portions of meals that freeze well. It will save you time on evenings when you need a quick meal or people have to rush out.
- Plan ahead using your meal planner from the Family Planner or ordering your very own Meal in a Box with 100 days worth of meals and shopping lists planned for you
- Create a dinner routine so that everything runs smoothly at this time and is not chaotic. You could give the ten minute call to dinner during which time everyone must go and wash their hands then take turns to set the table and prepare drinks for dinner etc
- To help reduce mess at the end of cooking and family meal times, put away as you use each item. For me, vegetable scraps go straight into their container as I make them, sauce bottles go straight back into the fridge after I have added them to the meal and spice jars into the cupboard. It has been a great habit to get into. I also place dishes or pans into the dishwasher as I am finished with them too. You then sit down to your meal with a semi-tidy kitchen and clean up is not so intimidating.
- If you don’t have a dishwasher fill your sink with warm soapy water instead and you can wash and drain as you go.
- Also create a family meals routine for after dinner. One where each person helps clear the table and tidy up after dinner. The job is done in a flash when everyone gives a hand.
- Have a bottle of water and vinegar mixture handy to give benches and stove a spray to degrease or remove spills before they harden and are difficult to clean. Best to do this before you serve up the meals to the table.
