Will Giving Money to Others Make me Rich?
We all know that giving money to others is a good thing. But does it really change our own lives so much that it makes us rich?
There are certain principles when it comes to money that are as true as gravity. Many finance guru’s including Robert Kiyosaki talk about the importance of giving money away, especially when you have very little money. Let me try and explain some of these principles…
First Economy = giving, receiving and MULTIPLICATION
Second Economy = buying, selling and ADDITION
GIVING MONEY CAN STOP MONEY CONTROLLING OUR LIVES
Planned giving and wanting nothing back breaks the power of money and possessions over your life. It puts us in control of our finances rather than it having control over us.
Signs that show money has control over you are:
- you feel stressed and anxious because you don’t have enough of it
- it causes negative responses in you and drags you down.
- doesn't matter how wealthy you are
- You might feel depressed because of the debt you are in
- You might feel frustrated because you never have enough money to do the things you want to do
- You can be obsessed by trying to get more
- you are working harder and harder to try and to get more money
The aim is to be released from the pursuit of money and its control over our life. The way we do that is to give money and to help provide for others.
If you can imagine water in a stagnant pond. The water becomes polluted and eventually dries up. Water in a channel however, continues to flow. As you give money and become a channel of resources for other people, more flows into your life.
To put it another way, we need to become producers, not consumers.
"PRODUCERS ARE PEOPLE WHO PRODUCE THINGS SUCH AS:
GIVING MONEY, GIFTS, MEALS, CLOTHES OR PETROL FOR OTHER PEOPLE RATHER THAN CONSUME WHAT THEY HAVE FOR THEMSLEVES"
So the question is…will giving money make you rich?
Well, what is your definition of rich?
Not to be in need?
To have all your requirements always met?
To be content with your life and in good relationships with the people around you?
To have a sense of satisfaction that you are part of making the world a better place because you have improved the quality of life for someone else?
If this is your definition of rich then you will indeed be incredibly wealthy. If you receive monetary wealth also then by that stage it will not seem all that important to you. The only excitement you will get from it is the opportunity to change more lives.
There are two proverbs that explain this giving money to others principle well.
#1 “A generous man will himself be blessed for he shares his food with the poor.” (Prov 22:9)
#2 “Give and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.” (Luke 6:38)
Not everyone may explain it this way but a principle of life is something that stands true always. If you drop an apple from the tree it will always fall down. If learn to give as your first priority in your finances it will be true for you too.
If you’re going to give planned giving a try you have to persevere with it for at least a year. You have to keep giving through all the seasons.
The easy seasons.
The hard seasons.
The tight seasons.
The stressful seasons.
The comfortable seasons.
Giving money to others is the Best Investment you could ever make for your family!
Still not sure if all this is true? Here is one of my most recent experiences with this principle to prove to you that it really does work!
Half way throught the year, my husband and I felt we should give $50 a week to a particular local project. We have been doing that consistently every week with no problem.
However, recently we had so many bills that we couldn't afford to pay them all (bad budget organization on my part there) and still have enough money for food and petrol for the week. It was very tempting not to still give that $50 that we had committed to. But we did. That left us $50 for a week to cover our petrol and food. We put $25 fuel in the tank and brought home $25 dollars worth and groceries and tried to be very creative.
In a few days time, we had a phone call from a friend to say that she had organized some people to bring some meals around for us. The previous few days I hadn't been feeling too well and she wanted to help me out. I explained to her that I had been feeling a lot better and would be fine but she wouldn't hear of it. Those meals carried us through until our next pay came through and we were fine again.
Our every need was met, we ate like Kings with huge fresh home cooked meals and we were even able to have friends over to share the meals with us! Great company, great food and great fun - I felt very rich indeed!
