Out of Routine?
Start Afresh with a Morning Routine

Feeling out of routine or disorganized is such a common feeling. And it’s not that hard to remedy. This step in getting started in your home organization involves setting a morning routine.

This is really an example to give you an idea of how to get things organized of a morning. Don’t expect to be able to do it all in the time you have on the first day. Maybe try to add one task to the routine each day and build up to it. Or even slower if necessary.

Remember, the goal is not to become a perfect mother or housewife! Or to have a picture perfect house. Our goal is to reduce any stress or tension we might experience through the day and enjoy being with our family without the frustration of seeing all the jobs that still need to be done! We can only do this by slowly developing habits that will help you for the rest of the day!

Work the order of some of the tasks according to what works better in your household. This routine doesn’t just have to be for you as a parent but teach it to your children also.

A) A good start to avoid being out of routine is to write a list of what tasks you want to get done in the morning and by what time.

B) Number them in the order you would like to do them. Be smart about this by doing bedroom jobs while you are still in the bedroom, bathroom and laundry jobs while you are down that end of the house and so forth.

Here is my example:

Rise and Shine...

1. Make the bed before you do anything else. Even if your eyes are still half closed.

2. Get dressed up to your shoes. This may include shower, hair, teeth clothes and makeup. I have found this to be such an important step. When you completely get ready for the day as if you were going to town you feel fresher, you work harder, you approach the day with more motivation and do your tasks quicker because you have prepared yourself for the day as if you were really going to work.

3. While in the bathroom swish and swipe. Swish the toilet, wipe down the counters (have a wipe n spray ready in one of the bathroom cupboards) and put any things away.

4. Fill the washing machine with a load of dirty washing on your way past ready to hang out later.

In the Kitchen...

5. Take vitamins and medication

6. Eat a good breakfast or cereal, toast, fruit etc. Feed the family and feed the pets.

7. Empty the dishwasher (because you followed your evening routine well the night before!) and load with breakfast dishes

8. Sweep the floor

Prepare for the Day

9. Morning Meditation: Grow by Reading Scripture, Input in Journal, Focus on God, Thanksgiving (GIFT) – I actually do this in my evening routine instead but many people prefer to do it first thing in the morning, even before getting out of bed. As parents, if you can do it before children start being active in the house, the better focus and enjoyment you will get out of your morning meditation time.

10. Check Family Organizer for tasks needing to be done that day and check all family members remember their tasks for the day. If you have been out of routine this is a good time to refocus and pull it all back together.

11. Go to today’s calendar page and input tasks for the day, check what is for dinner and get anything out of freezer if necessary

12. Make necessary phone calls for the day and check emails

13. ...

You can simplify and adapt the routine depending on the age of your children. A good idea is to type up the routine in order then paste applicable pictures next to each task. Do the same for the evening routine on the back of the page, laminate it and stick it on the back of their door or somewhere obvious for them to read and follow. You will find both a worksheet and graphics to cut out in your Organized Womans Family Planner to stop being out of routine and build your morning routine!
