Do You Dare to help me Save the Children?
As parents and families our cause should be to save the children around the world in as many ways as we can. Being organized in our family should go on beyond our own backyard and involve how we care for other, especially other children and families around the world. From time to time I will feature a different charity or event that will help support a particular family or group of children somewhere in the world.
Parachute 4 Poverty! On Saturday May 2nd I jumped out of a perfectly good aeroplane! All in aid of raising money to build Cambodian families a new home so they no longer had to live on a rubbish dump! Do you dare to partner with me to help make poverty history in their lives? You can still be a part of raising money for their new homes!
THE JUMPWe suited up just after lunch. There were two of us jumping on my flight. We had a practise run of falling and landing while suspended from a rail and then it was over to the plane for more rehearsals.
Finally we squashed into the back of our little plane and had the most amazing 15 minute ascent watching everything grow smaller, passing fluffy white clouds and seeing for miles along the coast and to the mountians. Absolutely spectacular. All too soon the cabin roared with wind as the door was opened and my friend shuffled over to the door for his tandem jump. All I could hear was 'Oh no!, Oh no! Oh no! and then I saw him fall away. I was so nervous that at this point I think I wet my pants as we also had to shuffle over to the door! (How embarrassing!) Perched on the edge of the plane was terrifying and thrilling and soon we were tumbling through the sky at 220kms per hour. We stabilised and below us on a huge white cloud was a brilliant rainbow in a perfect circle with our shadow right in the center. The following minutes I can only describe as hugely powerful and impacting. I felt such as sense of freedom and incredible delight at floating through the air. It was so calm and peaceful, so beautiful and life changing. All I can pray and hope is that once these Cambodian families move into their new home, that they will experience something even greater than that. A new freedom and lease of life that they have never known before!
THE STORY BEHIND THE JUMP Around the world today, millions of children and families are forced to live and exist in absolute poverty. Many live in refugee camps, along railway tracks, shanty towns and slums or in rubbish dumps. These poorest of the poor are locked into poverty through many circumstances – child slavery, displaced war victims, disease or the death of an income provider. This often forces families to even sell their own children into some form of slavery!

There is a group of us here in Victoria Australia who have seen the pictures of these kids living and eating in this rubbish dump. I’ve seen pictures of a mum sitting amidst the stinky refuse, washing plastic bags she has found as she can get money for them. That was not the destiny and purpose for her life.

We do not have to be anyone amazing but we can change the world through one generous action at a time. And yes there are hundreds upon thousands of causes out there that we could be a part of but I aim to try and save the children in the Phnom Pehn rubbish dump this time.I am going to do this through a program called Parachute for Poverty. Our strategy is to meet the needs of these poor families through a new home building and relocation program. By sponsoring me as a Parachute for Poverty jumper, you will be making a real impact on families living on the Phnom Phen City rubbish dump. It costs just $3000 to build a family a new house and they can go .
from this . . .
. . . to this!
I am paying the financial costs to cover my parachute jump which is no small feat in itself. We are a family of four living off one income. And yes, you might say, well isn’t that extreme in these times of financial crises? Why not donate that money as well as try to raise sponsorship? Wouldn’t doing a walk-a-thon be sufficient enough? Maybe, but there is something about having to pay a price to actually be involved that means my heart is now connected to these people forever! I want to visit them, to experience their world and let them know they are thought of and loved. I want them to know that no financial crisis is going to stop the rest of the world from wanting to SAVE THE CHILDREN! So far those daring to sponsor all the Parachute Jumpers have raised…
over $40,000!!!
